Unlocking the Power of Music in Speech Therapy

Kristy Russell Season 1

Episode 21:  Unlocking the Power of Music in Speech Therapy

Today’s episode features Salome Ratnarajah, Senior Speech Pathologist at Sydney-based clinic “Speak About Speech”.  A pianist herself since childhood, Sal combines her professional training with over 20 years of musical training, to support children from 18months to 18 years to connect, communicate and thrive in everyday life.

Sal uses all genres of music, from nursery rhymes to pop to Melodic Intonation therapy, to jamming with ukelele and piano, because she knows first hand the power and magic that Music brings to her clients and their families.

Key points from this episode include:

  • Using music to support literacy, communication and social skills in children

  • Singing to children to support language development and attention

  • Using different genres of music to connect and bond with babies, young children and teenagers

  • Melodic intonation therapy to support speech development

It’s such a rich conversation and I know you’ll get just as much enjoyment and practical tips as I did!

Happy listening…
